There is a right answer to this in Tampa, and it is late spring — April into May. If you clean your gutters once a year, that is the slot. If you clean them twice, that is the first of the two. The reasoning has less to do with trees than with what comes next on the calendar.
Why late spring wins
Three things line up. The spring shed has finished: oak catkins, the heaviest single drop of the year in most Tampa neighbourhoods, come down in February and March, and the spring pine needle drop follows. Clean before that and you clean twice.
Hurricane season has not started. It opens on 1 June, and the rain volume that arrives with even a passing tropical system is exactly what a blocked gutter cannot handle. Going into June with a clear system and tested downspouts is the whole point.
And the calendar is still open. In late May and June every gutter and roofing crew in Tampa Bay is booked out, because that is when everyone remembers at the same time. In April you can pick your day.
Month by month
January – March
Fine for an inspection, early for a cleaning. Oak catkins are coming down through February and March, so a February cleaning is often undone by April. Good window for repairs — resealing seams, refastening hangers — because the weather is dry and stable.
April – May
The best window of the year. Spring drop is done, storm season has not started, and the schedule is still open. This is the appointment that actually protects the house.
June – September
Peak season for us, and peak rain. Perfectly good time to clean if you did not manage the spring slot — a blocked gutter in August is worth clearing in August, not in November. Expect scheduling to move around the storms, and expect the calendar to be tighter.
October – November
The second visit. Live oaks and laurel oaks are still shedding through the summer and into fall, so this is the one that clears the year out. Also the right time to check for anything the storm season loosened.
December
Quiet, dry and easy to schedule. A good month for a first-time cleaning on a house you have just bought, and a good month for the repairs that are awkward to fit in during the busy season.
How to make it not your problem
The reason most people end up cleaning gutters in August rather than April is not disagreement about timing, it is that gutters are invisible until they overflow. Booking both visits at the start of the year is the fix — a spring appointment and a fall appointment, on the calendar, priced the same.
That is all our maintenance plan is: two visits, scheduled ahead, priority booking during the pre-season rush, and no contract to cancel. Call or text (267) 317-0494 and we will set both dates in one conversation.
Rather not do this yourself?
